Mr. & Mrs. J

Weddings are beautiful rain or shine ~ & it's a good thing, because our precious daughter (DD#1) got married OUTSIDE on a very rainy but other-wise lovely fall day.

Here are a few photos ~ more to come on Monday!

The Simple Woman's Daybook ~#169~ 10/15/12

For Today . . .

Outside my window . . .over-cast fall skies, but the leaves on the trees are still so incredibly beautiful. Getting to the time when the Elms are golden & the Oaks are deep burgandy.

I am thinking . . . of our sweet Jessica ~ she would have been 27 years old today.

I am thankful . . . for our DD#1's up-coming wedding.

From the kitchen . . . mixed veggies & yellow rice.

I am wearing . . . khakis, black turtle-neck, grey cardigan sweater.

I am creating . . . a peaceful, Christ-centered home.

I am going . . . to run some errands before work.

I am wondering . . . how the weather will be this weekend.

I am hoping . . . that it's crisp with NO rain.

I am reading . . . "Herbal Medicine."

I am looking forward to . . . this weekend.

I am learning . . . that ya gotta let go. :'-)

Around the house . . . general pick up. I need to do my end of the season weeding. My little front garden looks like Jumanji.

One of my favorite things . . . Irish/English/Scottish cottages.

A few plans for the rest of the week . . . preparation & calming of nerves. :-)

A favorite quote for the day . . . "Jesus met the deep, real needs of people's lives. He presented the Good News of God's Kingdom as one message for BOTH body AND soul . . . the paralyzed man's sins were forgiven & then he was healed; the demoniac was forgiven, exercised & healed . . . The Disciples preached for the same effect: the healing of body & soul." ~Sunday's sermon notes. Our guest pastor was Pastor John Mark from Gabon, Africa; via translator. Very cool.

Scripture thought . . . "'He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know Me?'" declares the LORD." ~Jeremiah 22:16

A picture thought for you . . .

Word-Filled Wednesday ~#70~ The Season Declares His Glory

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is not speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world." ~Psalm 19:1-4

"Let the heavens rejoice, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; they will sing before the LORD . . . " ~Psalm 96:11-13(a)
"Yet He has not left Himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; He provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy." ~Acts 14:17
"I tell you," He [Jesus] replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out." ~Luke 19:40
Fall is my favorite time of year. I revel in the crisp, chilly days of "sweater weather," the gathering of harvest, farmers in their fields, the Old Order German Baptists in my county driving their vegetable-laden wagons into town. The golden sunsets, the falling leaves and the colors that can simply take your breath away. Spring is lovely, but in my humble opinion, fall is when God shows off His artistic skills.

How great is our God
How can anyone miss the evidence of His love and care for us? His perfect timing of every season, the diverseness of each season, the provisions each season brings, different star patterns in the sky ~ even the Aurora Borealis reaches down to us from time-to-time. How can we keep from rejoicing?
If you take the time to watch the animals, you will see how He takes care of them ~ everything from nuts to gather, a change in their camouflaging color, and even a long winter's nap.

How great is our God!

Hymn writers have long recognized God's amazing love expressed to us throughout nature. My favorite verse of "How Great Thou Art" is often over-looked:
"When through the woods and forest glades I wonder
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze;
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sing my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee:
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!"

This is the perfect time of year to give praise to the Lord and join all nature in declaring His glory. Don't let the rocks beat you to it!

Mustard Poultice for Chest Congestion

I am 53 years old (at the time of this post) & was blessed to have my maternal grandma ~ Bigmom ~ live with us for most of my childhood. Bigmom & Poppie raised 14 children before, during and after the Great Depression on a farm in the hills of Kentucky. Because they lived so far out from any city, like everyone else in rural areas back then they had to rely upon home remedies.

And now, many of us are going back to the old home remedies that worked so well for so long & were replaced with Rx.

Here's another old remedy, this one is for chest congestion ~ Mustard Poultice. Ask you parents or grandparents, I'll be they've used it at least once in their life-times; probably during childhood.

I'll give you two different recipes ~ one for children & one for adults. **PLEASE NOTE** that this recipe will get "hot". It won't burn, but it may become a little uncomfortable. This is VERY effective but USE AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.

~Children's Recipe~

You will need:

~1 ts baking soda
~1 ts dried mustard powder
~1 ts flour
~water
~soft old t-shirt, cut-up sheet, flannel shirt, or bandana

Directions:

Use enough water to make a paste, smooth it onto the old t-shirt/sheet & place on the child's chest. Leave on for 10-15 minutes, unless it gets uncomfortable. Repeat as needed throughout the day & night.

 ~Adult Recipe~

You will need:

~1 TB baking soda
~1 TB dried mustard powder
~1 TB flour
~water
~soft old t-shirt, cut-up sheet, flannel shirt, or bandana

Directions:

Same as above, although many adults can wear the poultice all day with occasional replacement of ingredients.

Let me know if you try this. It's amazing.

Marking the Spot

Just saw this idea & thought you might like it, too.
Have an old book that you loved that simply won't last through another reading, but you can't stand the thought of completely trashing it? Make a bookmark from the spine & keep it's memory with you for years to come.

This is a great thing to do for your own personal use, but for gift ideas, place-settings for holiday meals ~ mark your family's & guests places with a book title that is a known favorite or suits their personality

Got clutter? Glue the book spines to a cheap little wooden box from Hobby Lobby, put your items in the box, put the box on your bookshelf & no one is the wiser . . . many opportunities for use.

I have used old book spines for bookmarks before, but never dressed them up with ribbons or tassels like these. What a great idea!

Pass it on . . .

The Simple Woman's Daybook ~#168~ 10/1/12

For Today . . .

Outside my window . . . mostly cloudy, cold front moving in. Fall ~ ahhhhh . . .

I am thinking . . . that there's a phone call I don't want to make to a certain relative. :-(

I am thankful . . . that the young lady who was in the wreck 2 houses down from us wasn't seriously hurt. She was texting & hit a parked SUV, flipped it, ran over a fire hydrant & then her car caught on fire. She got out by herself. God was so good to her, I hope He uses this even to draw her closer to Himself. ALSO ~ I found my dress for DD#1's wedding for about $50!!!

From the kitchen . . . Granny Smith apples & caramel dip.

I am wearing . . . jeans, my daughter's Golden Angels homeschool volleyball long-sleeved t-shirt.

I am creating . . . a peaceful, Christ-centered home.

I am going . . . to go back to short & curly hair :-)

I am wondering . . .  what next year will look like.

I am hoping . . . that it gets better all the time.

I am reading . . . Bible; the new Country Sampler magazine.

I am looking forward to . . . another 28 years with THE Man. Saturday will be our 28th anniversary.

I am learning . . . how truly creative my DD#1 is.

Around the house . . . general pick up; boiling water for the next couple days b/c of the water main break from last night's car wreck.

One of my favorite things . . . Maggie's morning "bed face." She's a Schnauzer & since she has the characteristic beard, she wakes up with bed FACE instead of bed head. lol

A few plans for the rest of the week . . . family time, work, worship practice, wedding prep . . .

A favorite quote for the day . . . "The way I live reflects God's importance in my life." ~from my Sunday sermon notes.

Scripture thought . . . "Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to Your love remember me, for You are good, O LORD." ~Ps. 25:7
