The Simple Woman's Daybook ~#170~ 11/19/12

For Today . . . 

Outside my window . . . Lovely sunshine breaking through the clouds. Mid-50's today, unseasonably warm, but we'll take it.

I am thinking . . . of how happy I am to have my family.

I am thankful . . . for a Chiropractor who is FINALLY someone who diagnosed THE Man's pain & suffering & has offered him some hope. Thank You, Lord!

From the kitchen . . . DD#2 blessed us with some of her chocolate chunk cookies. Perfection in every bite. :-P

I am wearing . . . my mid-calf-length brown thermal dress. One of my chilly weather favorites.

I am creating . . . a peaceful, Christ-centered home.

I am going . . . to go to work later today. The late shift.

I am wondering . . . which option to choose.

I am hoping . . . that the Lord's time & mine will be that same ~ quick. :-)

I am reading . . . the brand new, January 2013 issue of Country Sampler magazine. Just pulled it from my mailbox. Happiness ensues.

I am looking forward to . . . Thanksgiving with my sweet family. Including our new son-in-law!

I am learning . . . to pay closer attention to God's promptings.

Around the house . . . general pick-up, little details in readiness for the Thanksgiving feast. Rejoicing that we CAN have a Thanksgiving feast.

One of my favorite things . . . holiday family gatherings. Lots of laughter, good food, yummy desserts, everyone enjoying the time together.

A few plans for the rest of the week . . . family time, work, cleaning & prep for Thanksgiving.

Just For Me

I think many of us have "little things" that we consider private gifts between the Lord & ourselves. Mine comes as a result of the blessing of living in a rural county ~ Red Tailed Hawks.

Admittedly, I know that sounds a little silly, but I consider the sighting of a Red Tailed Hawk as the Lord's little gift just for me & I am thoroughly enjoying the many sightings I've had this fall. :-) Usually, I'm a "mammal person" but there is just something about these incredibly beautiful, powerful birds that blesses my heart every time I see one. 

So, I thought I would just let you know one of my "sweet little gifts" from the Lord & ask you ~ What is it that you consider a sweet little gift just between you & the Lord?

Word-Filled Wednesday ~ #73~ Appreciating Wisdom

"Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?" ~Job 12:12

"Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD." ~Leviticus 19:32

I freely confess that I had the most incredible grandparents; I was especially close to my Grandpa C and my Bigmom. Some of my best memories are of sitting at their feet and listening to them tell me stories from their childhood and teen years. Three of my four grandparents were born in the 1800's (the other didn't miss it by much) and all of them were raised on Kentucky farms without electricity, cars, running water or paved roads. They raised their own food, they broke ice in the well to get water & chopped wood for the stove's fire on cold, winter mornings; my Bigmom had all of her and Poppie's children at home, and the men of both sides of my family followed the south end of a northbound mule or horse while tilling the fields.

Those of us who have had dearly loved grandparents sometimes forget that they were once young. That at one time our grey-haired grandmothers were cute little girls in petty-coats, ribbons and curls; that their feeble legs once chased their friends in games of tag, their gnarled fingers were once long and smooth and belonged to young women in love that held the hands of our handsome young grandpa's. 

Our grandpa's were feisty, fun-loving little boys who pulled the pigtails of the little girl who sat in front of them at school. They were strong, fit teenagers who had muscles that were borne from hard, physical work on the farm; and that their hearts once skipped a beat when they saw that pretty young woman two rows up from him at church.

I also know that I learned as much from my grandparents as any teacher I ever had, including my own parents. I learned to respect my elders by watching them respect others by their kind conversation, by Grandpa taking his hat off in a building or around a lady. I learned to appreciate family by the love that they lavished on me. I learned the fun of clean humor, making some of the best toys and play-houses out of sticks, rocks and imagination. The sheer pleasure of eating a basket full of raspberries on a front porch swing. Unbeknownst to me, I was taught the joy of learning through good conversation and being amazed at how adept those old fingers could be at making a bed or so nimble using a skill that they had done for decades. I also learned that so often in their lives the Lord was their only Resource, that there were times when they were drawn to their knees when a child was sick ~ or died. I learned that they could still sing the first hymns they had ever learned. I witnessed deep, abiding faith.

The Lord Himself said that we are to revere and respect our elderly. They have lived, they have loved and they have so much to teach us if we will let them. The store I work at honors seniors by giving them a discount, so many seem somewhat ashamed of admitting that they are old enough to use it. I usually tell them that I call it "The Wisdom Discount" and, my, you should see their eyes light up! "Yeah, I like that!" they often say. Now . . . if they could only find someone to share that wisdom with.

Let us be those people. Do you still have your grandparents? Honor them by asking them to tell you about their childhood and younger years. Share a hobby with one of them. Ask Grandpa what attracted him to Grandma, ask Grandma what made her say "I do." 

Ask them to pray for you ~ that you will have the same deep, abiding faith that carries them. That you may be the same elderly wisdom to your family that they have been to yours.

Happy Places

With my husband's, THE Man's, health scare & the disappointment over the election all happening this week, I have decided to end this week with something I consider beautiful. 

My daddy's side of the family is Scotch-English & I cherish those roots ~ particularly the Scottish side. I don't know if it is those long-ago bloodlines that beckon me, or simply their quaint, primitive & simple beauty, but I love Scottish/Irish/English cottages ~ inside & outside. They make me sigh with sheer peaceful enjoyment just to look at them. I even found a website where you can buy floorplans to build your own reproduction Irish cottage. Ha! Imagine that.

So . . . I want to end this stressful week (& celebrate finding a Dr. we believe can help THE Man) by sharing some of my favorite "Happy Places," as I like to call them. Enjoy . . .

He Wins!

There are times in our lives when it seems that we are yanked around like a toy in dog's mouth: jerked one way & just as you start to get your barings you are jerked the other way, time-and-time-again. 

Uncertain times effect all facets of life ~ our family, extended family, our work, schools, & our country. But when the dust settles there is ONE THING that is SURE: GOD is STILL on His throne! 

We shake off the dust of hardship or disappointment, open His Word and find that the last chapter has already been written. He wins.  

He wins!

That is all we need to know.

God is STILL on the Throne!

A sad, sad day in the history or our country. "The definition of insanity is doing something the same way, over & over again, & expecting a different out-come." If anyone ever doubted that our country, our culture, is lost ~ last night is your proof that it is. Evil has won a battle but NOT the war!

BUT BE OF GOOD CHEER! GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE! 

Evidently, America has hard lessons to learn.

So, remember this: "Who shall serparate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ... NO, in ALL these things we are more than conquerors through HIM Who loved us. For I AM CONVINCED that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, NOR ANYTHING ELSE IN ALL CREATION, WILL BE ABLE TO SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD THAT IS IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD." ~Romans 8:35, 37-39

Let us continue to pray for our country, our leaders, our families & our influence in & for the cause of Jesus Christ.

Standing Firm in My Faith . . .
