Homeschooling is NOT the Experiment

"Home-based education is NOT an experiment. It's how people learned to function in the world for centuries. And there is no reason to think people today can't do the same thing. School is the experiment, not the lack of it, and the experiment is in trouble." -Wendy Priesnitz/author

Our dear friend, Gregg Harris, has often observed, arguments against homeschooling by parents are equally valid against home cooking by parents. (But don't tell Michelle O.)
"Parents might not balance meals properly, they might give their kids ... junk food, some might not feed their kids at all. Some might leave "gaps" in their children's dietary experience. Shouldn't we then require all parents to use meal plans prepared and approved by university educated and certified dietitians? And bring their children in at least once a year to be measured and weighed to make sure that they are following the plans properly? And if their children are not within the proper height and weight ranges on the charts, then their right to cook at home would be revoked and the children required to take their meals at state-run and -supervised cafeterias?
"I actually hesitate to spell this out in too much more detail for fear that someone will take me seriously and draw up plans to implement state-certified nutritional and cooking programs for parents. Don't laugh!
"It sounds ridiculous when applied to the matter of feeding our children, but it is equally ridiculous when applied to the far more important matter of educating our children."
As many of you know, we homeschooled our girls their whole lives ~ officially for 16 yrs, K through 12 for both. I would never have done it any other way.

  1. I agree that you best keep these thoughts on food planning quiet... we REALLY don't need Big Brother in our kitchens. I salute you for homeschooling your girls all the way through. I believe home schooled children are the key to Americas future.

  2. oh Kim, wonderful post!! I treasure your blog! and seems I can comment again! woot woot!!! (I have a love hate relationship with blogger)

as you know, I used to homechool my others ( dh would only approve of them being 'home' til fourth grade. I honored his desire and it was for the good. Then Cody was struggling and God moved on Dh's heart and it's been three years now, we are on our third year, can you believe how fast time flies? Now we also have T4 home with us. SO MUCH FUN!! Loud, crazy some times .. lots of giggles and sometimes tears of frustrations as boys will be boys but life is really good. C is now flourishing self esteem wise, he's learning to listen without fear of making a mistake, learning to take the plunge and go for it in all areas.. even playing football and on the wrestling teams at our day school because he can now focus and put into practice what he is learning. T4 has come out of his shell, gaining in confidence and LOVES hands on learning. If all areas could be hands on, he'd be in heaven! My children are happy, finding school is fun again an learning is cool.... thanks all to your grace, your prayers and your advice.. You have made an eternal imprint on myself as a woman following God, and my children. I can't thank you enough. I consider you a mentor and a dear friend. I love ya!
