Easy Homemade Rootbeer
Make your own homemade rootbeer easy-peasy! You could even call this "Sun Rootbeer."
Here's what you need:
~1 ts. yeast
~1/2 c. warm water
~2 c. sugar
~4 ts. rootbeer extract
~1 gal. water
~1 2-liter OR 1-gallon glass OR plastic bottle/jug
~bath-sized towel
~several individual serving bottles, IF desired
Directions:
~Dissolve yeast in warm water; then add sugar & dissolve
~Add this to the gallon (OR 2-liter) bottle/jug
~Add rootbeer extract & stir
~Add enough water to nearly fill jar ~ stir, stir, STIR!
~Cover bottle/jug w/a towel & set in warm sun for at least 4 hours.
~after it sets for 4 hours, IF you want to transfer the rootbeer to your own individual-sized serving glass bottles, this is when you should do it, then . . .
~Place in frig overnight & drink the next day.
Enjoy!

My children love rootbeer! This looks easy enough that I could even do it! :) Thanks for sharing your recipe!
ReplyDeleteDo you think you could substitute Truvia (or Splenda, even) for the sugar? Or is there a chemical reaction between sugar and yeast that needs to occur? :)
ReplyDeleteDo you put the cap on the bottles while they are in the sun or just cover with the towel with the bottles open? I am guessing you leave caps off?
ReplyDeleteGreat questions!
ReplyDeleteDenise ~ I'm not sure, you could try it. This is simply the recipe we've always used & I never thought about any substitutes.
Julie ~ I wondered that, myself, b/c the recipe wasn't specific, so we just set the caps on top, w/o screwing them on, so that IF pressure needs to be released it can happen w/o the whole thing exploding. However, I've never noticed anything like that even starting to happen.
So, you ladies let me know how you like it!
