The End of an Era

I just couldn't let this go by without a mention.

I'm showing my age here, but since yesterday was my 51st birthday...I don't care. lol

My 1st T.V. hero & my very 1st movie star crush passed away yesterday, at age 85. Fess Parker ~ who played such legendary American historic heroes as Davey Crockett & Daniel Boone. One of the most natural actors ever, it always seemed like he may as well have been playing 'himself.' One of those actors that you never heard a discouraging word about ... or from. He had enough self-respect & grace to recognize when his 'era' of stardom was coming to an end, stepped down & went to the wine country of California & opened a multi-award winning vineyard & hotel, Fess Parker's Wine Country Inn & Spa. And, according to things I've read over the years, there he had the opportunity to enjoy is wife, his children & being a part of the lives of his 11 grandchildren.

We need more Fess Parker's in Movie-dom, today. Where are these fine men (& women) who are not only principled, honorable people, but have the grace to know that the world doesn't revolve around them?

I hope Fess is in the Lord's presence right now.

Blessings from Ohio...Kim<><

  3. I totally AGREE!! I fondly remember both Davy Crockett (my own sons loved Davy) and Daniel Boone and was very saddened to hear of Mr. Parker's passing.

    Blessings!

  4. I loved him too! We have the Davey Crockett video. My kids watched it over and over during our homeschooling years. I did not know he had a vineyard here...was it in the Napa Valley? that is so close to us. I will have to look into it. Thank you for sharing. Wasn't he handsome even in his older years?

  6. I'm in my 50's too, and I have really
fond memories of settling down in the
evening with my family to watch both
of those shows. It was an innocent and
wonderful time for TV then. Now the only
thing I watch is an occasional show on
    HGTV.

  8. My husband came in the house yesterday telling me that Daniel Boone and Davey Crockett had died. I must say that it caught me off guard and my response was: I'm so sorry did you just find out that they are dead? LOL I had no idea that Fess Parker had died. Then I felt sad. We do need more men like him. My husband told me that yesterday was his wife's birthday. I was so sad for her. Thanks for sharing about this honorable man.

  9. Hello there, Kim,
I'm late getting around again today...having fun reading blogs and leaving comments.

Thank you so much for the sweet note that you left me today....and for rejoicing with us!

I had to tell you that I enjoyed your comment about how we even do our errands with our husbands at the same places! :) SO cool.

I had a funny thought when I was typing that part of the post...how when we were ...ahem...younger..."dates" meant hiring a babysitter, going out to eat and talking about fun things. Now "dates" mean any time we have to ourselves to do whatever needs to be done. Keeping a good marriage through the periods in between those two definitions of "dates" is what makes doing errands together now so much fun!

Enjoyed your post about Fess Parker. I remember him well...and Howdy Doody...and Annie Oakley...I just turned 60 this past fall. ~wink~

I want to try your recipes from the St. Patrick's Day posts. My hubby used to make Irish Soda Bread all the time but it has been a while since we've had it. Thanks for the recipes.

  10. and p.s.

I just was reading down over the comments from yesterday's post about my hubby. I wanted to come back here and tell you that yes...he did get to read it. Actually, I asked him to read it before I posted...and he let me! :)

  11. Hi,
I've been reading your blog, and this my first time to comment. I'm in my mid-fifties and remember Fess Parker well. I loved "Daniel Boone" when I was younger, and always thought well of him. So sorry to hear of his passing. You're right, we need more actors like him...thank you for sharing about it.

(And belated Happy Birthday....mine was last week too!) Have a lovely weekend! :o)
