Homemade Facewash (Oily Skin)

I will be 51 years old in a matter of weeks, and my face and hair are as oily as they were when I was 16 years old. If any of you are familiar w/Clinique, I am a Type 4 (I worked for Clinique for 4 years - yeeeeeeears ago!).

Up until recently I still battled w/acne and uncontrolable oil. Until recently . . .

A few years ago, after gleaning from several books about homemade skin care, I started making my own modified formula for oily skin. It is AWESOME. It has completely renewed my complexion - it's soft and smooth and clear - and has completely gotten rid of one of my DD's back acne. It's so simple . . . here's how it's done . . .

Here's what you need:

~an empty bottle (approx 7-10 oz)
~a bottle of UNscented liquid Castile soap (I recommend Dr. Bronner's)
~a funnel
~essntial oils: Tea Tree, Lavender & Rosemary; not only b/c of their wonderful fragrances but also b/c of their antibacterial benefits.

1) Pour in the Castile soap (which is AWESOME for oily skin AND hair).

2) Add your essential oils ~ 20 drops of Tea Tree, 20 drops of Lavender and 10 drops of Rosemary.
3) Shake. One pump of soap (or a little larger than a quarter) on a clean, wet wash cloth OR in your wet hands will be plenty.

DO NOT USE THIS TO TAKE OFF EYE MAKE-UP!!!

Since it is made w/anitbacterial oils it also makes a great shampoo for oily hair and/or an anitbacterial hand wash at your sink.

If you try this, let me know how it works for you!!

  5. FANTASTIC! I had severe acne as a teen, but I outgrew it in my early 20s other than an occasional mild breakout. However, my NINE yr old is already having problems, and I've been trying to decide what to use for his skin. I'm going to try this!

    1. Hi Elaine ~ I'm not sure if Walmart carried castile soap (liquid or bar), but I think most Kroger stores do. See if there are any health food stores in your area, they will for sure. Your daughters will LOVE this face wash!

    1. Sorry I didn't see that before. It won't alter the benefits too much. All 3 of the oils are anti-bacterial & anti-fungal (tea tree is also antiseptic)but the rosemary adds the castile soap in buffering the possible harshness of of the other 2 oils. My skin happens to be very oily, acne-prone & thick ~ even though I am now 53 ~ so even using tea tree directly on a blemish doesn't faze my skin, but I like the buffer of the rosemary & the hint of it's fragrance is a bonus to me.

So . . . after all that, it shouldn't bother you unless your skin is on the oily AND sensitive side. :-) Let me know how you LOVE it.

    1. Hi Doreen ~ I'm so excited that it's worked for you & your daughter, too. I'm always excited when something so easy to make & using such simple ingredients does a better job than all the expensive products.

      So glad you stopped in.

    1. Hi Jodi ~ Thanks for asking. I use my Tea Tree & Thyme Toner/tonic, mostly: http://marmeespantry.blogspot.com/2011/01/tea-tree-thyme-healing-tonic.html

Here are some other astringents/toners, sometimes I use the 1st one mentioned: http://marmeespantry.blogspot.com/2012/03/homemade-toners-astringents.html

For a "moisturizer" I prefer Hyaluronic acid/serum. It's something that your body makes anyway but starts slowing down at about age 30; it hydrates your skin & body & helps w/everything from keeping skin plump & soft to, if taken internally (& I do that, too), helps w/joints, skin, dry eye . . . all sorts of good things. I use a serum called Hya-Glo on my face, you can find it in many health food stores. A little goes a LONG way.

      Blessings . . .
